WSESU DISTRICT DIVERSITY/EQUITY COMMITTEE – DISTRICT ACTION PLAN, 2008-2010

Mission Statement: It is our mission to foster learning environments in which all members of the school community are safe, feel valued and are appreciated. We promote policies and procedures for our District which value equity and diversity in our learning environments.

1.Communicate harassment and bullying policies and procedures

  • Ensure that harassment policy and bullying legislation is listed in all handbooks (students, staff, parents), and the first newsletter sent to parents.
  • Intentionally review the harassment policy, including policy updates as required by new legislation, and VSBA models, with all groups (students, staff, parents) at an early fall meeting.
  • Recommend that all school entities—after-school programs, activity groups, clubs, athletic teams—intentionally review harassment/bullying legislation.
  • As needed, make recommendations to District School Boards to revise harassment policy to meet federal statute as well as state statute.
  • All schools will report data annually to District Equity Coordinator.
  • Use YRBS & Asset Development data as well as school data to measure progress.
  • Disseminate relevant articles/information to District staff members as appropriate.
  • Disseminate brochures to parents on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop a Diversity/Equity website and publicize to district staff.

2. Anti-harassment, anti-bias curriculum

  • As they are considered, review new textbook purchases for bias.

  • Continue to provide formal instruction in equity, diversity acceptance and anti-bias through site-specific programs.
  • Continue to provide informal instruction in equity, diversity acceptance and anti-bias through natural integration into all curricula areas, as appropriate.
  • Continue to integrate PRIDE curriculum across grade levels, giving feedback to Stuart Strothman and members of the Diversity/Equity Committee.

A sub-committee of the diversity committee has been formed to work on action steps.

3. Training/professional development

  • The district will offer annual harassment/diversity or events for staff members, students, and parents.
  • Each school site will offer annual and ongoing professional development pertaining to harassment, bullying, bias, and equity or diversity education for all staff members.
  • Increase staff members’ awareness about how to incorporate anti-bias themes and multi-cultural education in all curriculum areas.
  • Increase staff members’ awareness about the potential for their own inherent biases.

Diversity committee will provide reminders about the need for ongoing training.

4. Site-specific action plans

  • Each school will generate at least one specific annual goal to address issues of harassment, equity, diversity and bias included in School-based Action Plans.

Diversity committee will send email in the spring as a reminder.

5. A district Diversity/Equity Committee will be maintained

  • Each school and entities within the district [EEE, Special Education Programs, etc.] will send a representative to the District Diversity/Equity
  • We will invite parents and members of the wider community to join this committee.
  • The Diversity Equity Committee will meet once a month.
  • Committee members will share and discuss articles/resources to enhance their committee work.

6. Projects and efforts in place within the school community to address equity, anti-racism, diversity

  • Encourage and support district-wide demonstrations of diversity.
  • Implement one new District- or school-based initiative in 2008 or 2009. Examples may include the ‘Best Buddies’ project or Mix-It Up Day, among a variety of choices.
  • Provide a multiculturalism bibliography in hard copy and online.
  • Collaborate with Windham County agencies/coalitions to increase students’ awareness and participation in diversity activities.
  • Support the No Bystander Movement [Youth Impact Windham County]
