School board meeting update Beginning in December and continuing as recently as last Monday evening, the school board has been working on next year's operating budget for the school. Thus far, much of the discussion has concerned the projected revenues from the State of Vermont and the creation of a capital plan for the building and grounds. Over the course of the next two weeks, the board will be finalizing the budget that will go before voters for approval on Town Meeting Day. The board is meeting next Monday, January 11 at 6:30 PM in the school library and the following Tuesday, January 19 at 6:30 PM. Parents, students and community members are encouraged to attend these meetings to add their voice to the deliberations. The Guilford Town School Board members include Lisa Ford, Carole Mills, Kevin Freitas, Timm Harris and Arthur Pettee.
WINTER SPORTS UPDATE ~ Our winter sports program started Tuesday, January 5 and will continue January 12, 26, February 2 and 9. Students not participating need to be picked up at 11:55 A.M., as there is no bus transportation home on those days. Please remember for all activities except MT Snow, you will need to pick up your child at 2:30 P.M. at their activity. Parents of MT Snow students can meet the bus for pickup behind Burger King at 5:00 P.M. The office needs to know if there will be any changes in transportation to and from the activity.
RED CROSS BABYSITTING COURSE: Saturday, January 16th, 2010, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. , at the Red Cross office 81 High St., Brattleboro, VT . Call 802-254-2377 to sign up. Students 11-15 years old will get the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. The course will also teach you how to be a good role model, make decisions, solve problems, and keep children safe, how to handle emergencies such as injuries, illnesses and household accidents, and how to write resumes and interview for jobs. Course fee $45
MAKE UP DAY for MADD SCIENCE will take place on Wednesday, January 13 from 3:15-4:15.
Starting yesterday, Wednesday, January 6 A.M., Cindy’s bus will be
picking up Paul’s Road and Partridge Road students. The pick up time
will be the same as before. In the P.M. these same students will be going home on Reita’s bus. The drop off time will be the same as before.

Jr. Explorers~ Mad Science introduces a new 6-week program filled with terrific, hands-on science experiments called Jr. Explorers. Students will engage in fun, interactive and educational hands-on activities that instill a clearer understanding of science and how it affects the world around them. The spectacular science topics we will explore include: The Science of Toys, Movie Effects, Mad Science Machines, Bugs, Detective Science & Earthworks. Each young Mad Scientist will be making some great take-home projects too, including an amazing drag racer, a cartoon creator and more! Open to grades K-6.
Dates: Wednesdays, Feb. 3-Mar. 17 (no class 2/24)
Time: 3:15-4:15

Youth Services Helps Community Celebrate Arts
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January18
Individuals and groups of all ages from throughout the area are invited to attend Youth Services' Community Celebration of the Arts at the River Garden in Brattleboro on January 18, from 12:30 to 4 p.m., as either spectators or performers. The event is free to the public. Organized by local Americorps members, the afternoon will feature performers of every kind. "If you are a speaker, band, spoken word artist, poet, dance troupe, choir, or improv group we want you to come and perform," explained Shambulia Gadsden Sams, Americorps member at Youth Services, who added that there will also be Open Mic for spontaneous performances.
